A folding grappling hook attached to a stout 30-foot long piece of lightweight cord. Useful for keeping yourself safe from falls. Can be used in place of a long rope for butchering, in a pinch.

A Grappling Hook can be used to climb up and down safely. Either from the inventory or when held in the hand, applying it will promt you to choose a direction in which to deploy it, creating a climbing spot, you can then press < to climb onto a surface near the top of the rope. It cannot be deployed directly below a roof; on the player's own tile; and although it can be stood in mid-air like the Indian rope trick, attempting to climb the rope when the other end is in mid-air will fail. A grappling hook is only good for going up one Z-level, no more.

The deployed grappling hook can be climbed down in the same way you would with a drain pipe or a step ladder, by using e to interact with it while above it, using e besides the rope will give you the option to dismantle it, you can also apply it into an empty space to hang it from an edge, but this may fail, causing the hook to fall to the ground below and breaking into its components (without any loss of materials). From the ground, you can examine your grappling hook climbing spot to retrieve the item, just like caltrops.

Zombies will bash your standing grappling hook climbing spot. This removes the climbing spot and disassembles the hook into its components.

If you have a grappling hook in your inventory, then when you examine a ledge and choose climb down, then you'll get the prompt "Use your grappling hook to climb down?" Choose yes and you'll get "You tie the rope around your waist and begin to climb down." This only works to go down one Z-level. Two or more, you only get the choice to jump. Just like climbing down drain pipes or climbing down a roof without other aids, there is a chance to fail based off torso encumbrance. Broken limbs and low stats seem to affect the success chance little, if at all.
